Lighting and Compositing

Gnomeo and Juliet - Revealing Benny:

This shot was given to me with the basic 3D light setup in Maya. The lighting was then tweaked, rendered, and major final adjustments were done in Fusion.

Gnomeo and Juliet – Juliet on top of castle:

This shot was started at the beginning of the production and then asked to be changed close to the end of production. Major changes in the pipeline prevented this shot from being re-edited. Adjustments to the background were minimal, however Juliet was completely re-lit from scratch. This was required to match the old lighting that was approved from the beginning of production as well as making major adjustments to the key lighting. A major adjustment was to use 2 key lights one with soft shadows to give Juliet a very rounded look, another to create strong hard casted shadows.

Gnomeo and Juliet – Pulling head out of fence:

This shot was propagated from the Key shot. Major adjustments to the flower and background were required to make this shot match the Key shot and adjacent shots.

Gnomeo and Juliet – Pushing Gnomeo

This shot was started from a Key shot however very little from the key shot remains as almost all lights and compositing had to be heavily modified.

Gnomeo and Juliet – Shroom hands Juliet a flower:

This shot was started from a key shot. Most lights and compositing scripts required major adjustments to achieve the look the art director wanted and to match adjacent shots.

Gnomeo and Juliet – Shroom warns Benny

This shot was propagated from a key shot and required major adjustments so it matched the adjacent shots.

Camelot – Balcony shot

This shot required the dolly tracks to be removed and the boys’ blood to be added. This meant a 3D track had to be made in NukeX and from that the camera was stabilized and a 3D set could be built using the point cloud as a reference. A matte painting was created in Nuke then projected onto the 3D object.

Camelot – Falling with the sword

This shot needed a simple blue screen matting to be applied. The stock footage made this matting very difficult, as there are multiple shades of blue screen in the original footage. Some of the shades of bluescreen were blown out and created challenging matting issues for the drops of water and clothing edges.

Camelot – Arthur and Guinevere riding a horse

This shot required fog to be applied to match adjacent shots. A 3D camera track in NukeX  was created and from that track a 3D set was built to extract the Z-Death information.
